New Home: Austin PBS’s new headquarters, the Austin Media Center, is located on the Austin Community College Highland Campus in Austin, TX. Destined to become a unique and energizing space, the Austin Media Center serves as a creative hub and base for Central Texans to gather, learn, share and create.
In the space that formerly hosted the Dillard’s department store at Highland Mall, Austin PBS occupies 45,000 square feet on the ground floor of the 185,000 square feet building. With over 100 miles of cabling to support broadcast functionality, the Austin Media Center is the largest 12G facility in the United States.
New Content: Austin PBS broadcasts 35,000 hours of curated content across four channels every year—with 8,000 hours available online. Our locally produced original content is distributed nationally and has won numerous Lone Star Emmy awards, a National Medal of Arts, and a Peabody Award, making Austin PBS one of the most prolific public media stations.
Our state-of-the-art studios will allow us to continue to create and share compelling, relevant content that builds and honors our community. The Pfluger Keller Community Soundstage will house live broadcasts, film screenings and community forums inspired by PBS content. Fun fact: the 6,600 square foot studio is home to the largest floating acoustical slab in Texas, winning the Golden Trowel Award from the Texas Masonry Council for precision and consistency of concrete slab.
New Possibilities: Austin PBS is embarking on an ambitious transformational journey. Our new home will help us expand our reach and impact on a diverse and growing Central Texas community as we embrace a new partnership with Austin Community College, engaging digital native generations.
Community-focused, collaborative use of digital media is the common thread that connects several Austin PBS initiatives on this journey. Each initiative aims to engage students through internships and apprenticeships, as well as directly serving our region through new and expanded media opportunities.
